Romantic Grass of the Week: Chloris ventricosa (Purple windmill grass) Tufted tall, skinny perennial average 1m high with just 3 - 4 branches 4-10cm long. Digitate flower, similar to lots of weeds like Digitaria cilaris but difference in that spikelets only on 1 side of axis.(an example of how our native grasses are not so competitive/more fragile). spikelets pale green to purplish black. Leaf sheath and ligule scabrous or with long hairs; blade flat, 2-3mm wide. found in woodland, clay-shalea nd aluvium, common in Qld and NSW, fragile in Vic.
